Japanese Genmaicha Green Tea

GenmaichaGenmaicha, also known as the popcorn tea, is a Japanese green tea that incorporates tender delicate green tea leaves, corn, and popped brown rice kernels.

You will find that Genmaicha has a mild taste of green tea with a slight taste from the roasted rice, sort of like popcorn.

In Japan, it is common for people drink this tea daily because of its antioxidant properties and high mineral content.

Genmaicha was first used by Japanese peasants to save money when drinking tea, but now it is popular amongst all social classes.

Genmaicha is known as "popcorn tea" because of the rice popping during the firing process.

GenmaichaAcording to legend, sometime around the 14th century, a servant name Genamai was beheaded because he let some rice fall into the cup of a samurai warlord's tea.

The samurai still drank the tea even though the rice was still in his tea. He enjoyed the newfound taste and felt bad that he had just beheaded the servant who accidently founded this tasty tea.

To honor Genami, the warlord ordered that this rice and tea be served every morning and named it "Genmaicha" after him.
