Mangosteen
Known as "The Queen of Fruits," the Mangosteen is a fruit that has been used for centuries. The Mangosteen is well known in eastern Asia for its health benefits.
In the exotic region of Thailand the Mangosteen grows abundantly. Mangosteen should not be confused with the mango, an entirely different plant. It is part of a group known as the Guttiferae, a family of mainly tropical trees and shrubs that secrete a yellow resinous juice.
Xanthones (pronounced zan-thone) are abundantly found in Mangosteen fruit. Consisting of a smooth dark outer skin and snow-white fleshy interior pulp, the Mangosteen fruit's xanthone content is of the highest levels researchers have found.
Xanthones by definition are biologically active plant phenols that possess a high degree of medicinal properties. Garcinia Mangostana L. or the Mangosteen tree, is a natural source of dietary xanthones that offer a wide range of health benefits.
Where can I get my hands on this stuff??
Sorry to break the news but these fruits are not currently available to the United States because the rind can carry pests that would threaten other crops.
But your in luck, even though you probably won't be able to find the actureal mangosteen fruit, you can easily find a bottle of Mangosteen Juice which can be just as healthy if not more. There are several brands of Mangosteen out there for you to choose.
Some of the more popular brands out there are Xango and Thai-Go which I don't recommend over any other brand, they're just the only ones that I've tried. Since the actual mangosteen fruit is not imported to the US we only have the juice available to us at this time. So why not give it a try!
